"Nebuchadnezzar came into Jerusalem in 605 and carried off to Babylon the vessels of the house of God and members of the nobility of Judah, among them Daniel the prophet (2 Chron 36:2-7; Jer 45:1; Dan 1:1-3). Jehoiakim was taken in chains to Babylon (2 Chron 36:6). In 597, Nebuchadnezzar carried off Jehoiachin, his mother, his wives, 3,000 princes, 7,000 men of might, and 1,000 artisans (2 Kings 24:14-16). Among them was the prophet Ezekiel. This was the first large-scale deportation of the southern kingdom into Babylonia. In 586 Nebuchadnezzar burned the temple, destroyed the city of Jerusalem, and deported into Babylonia all but the poorest of the land (2 Kings 25:2-21). A third group was taken into Babylonia five years after the destruction of the city (Jer 52:30)." (THE NEW INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY OF THE BIBLE, ¬© 1987 Zondervan, p. 194)
